Munich police shot dead a suspicious person, who appeared to be carrying a firearm, on Thursday in an area near the Israeli Consulate and a museum on the city's Nazi-era history, the interior minister for the German state of Bavaria said.

The suspect died at the scene after being shot while exchanging fire with police, the interior minister said.

"These are the first confirmed findings in connection with the ongoing operation: - In the Karolinenplatz area, police officers fired shots at a suspicious person; the person was hit. -The operational area is cordoned off ... Police officers have spotted a person who appeared to be carrying a firearm. The emergency services used their service weapons and the person was hit and injured," the police said on X.



The police revealed that there are no indications of any other suspects in connection with the operation. Many forces are on site at the incident site and are clarifying the situation.

Police have increased the forces in the Germany's third-biggest city. "However, we have no information about other locations or other suspects." police said on social media.

The incident took place in the Karolinenplatz area, near downtown Munich.

Earlier police had said a large operation was underway in response to an incident and asked the public to avoid the area in a post on social media platform X. A helicopter had been deployed to give a better overview of the situation.
