Rockets launched at Israel in retaliation for airstrike that killed four Syrians, says Hezbollah

Hezbollah launched rockets at northern Israel on Thursday in response to an Israeli air strike that killed four Syrian nationals in south Lebanon. This follows the killing of a top Hezbollah commander, Fuad Shukr, by Israel earlier in the week.

Hezbollah confirmed its actions through a statement, saying, "launched dozens of Katyusha rockets... in response to the Israeli enemy's attack on... (the southern village of Shama) that killed a number of civilians." The Israeli military retaliated soon after, claiming that its air force struck the Hezbollah launcher used for the attack, reported AFP.

However, IDF claimed that only five of the barrage of rockets could enter Israel and no damage or injuries have been reported, according to CNN.

As the rockets were launched, warning sirens blared across northern Israel, according to the Israeli military's statement.

Earlier, the Lebanese health ministry reported that four Syrians died due to an Israeli strike in the southern village of Shama. "The health ministry announces... four Syrian nationals were martyred" in an "Israeli strike" on Shama, read the ministry's statement. The toll might rise pending DNA testing, and five Lebanese nationals were injured in the incident. Emergency services indicated that the deceased were farm workers from the same family.

This marks Hezbollah’s first rocket attack since Fuad Shukr, one of their top commanders, was killed in an Israeli air strike on Tuesday evening. Hezbollah's leader Hassan Nasrallah has stated that operations would resume on Friday morning.

Compounding the tension, hours after Shukr's death, Hezbollah ally Hamas's chief Ismail Haniyeh was killed in a strike in Tehran. Israel has not commented on Haniyeh's death, while both Iran and Hamas blame Israel for the attack.
