Nearly a year of devastating war has left Gaza's 2.4 million people enduring a humanitarian tragedy, with children in the besieged territory the most vulnerable, a UNICEF official told AFP in an interview.
Jonathan Crickx, the UN agency's spokesman for the Palestinian territories, has returned this month from a week-long mission to Gaza, still heavily impacted even as Israel shifts its military focus to Lebanon.
He talked to AFP about the plight of Gaza's children, who have not had a single day of education since the Israel-Hamas war broke out on October 7.
"You see children who are not allowed to have the life of normal children, no education, no play, no joy," Crickx said.
"The faces of these children are... so sad."
Most children he saw in the war-battered Palestinian territory were helping their family as they no longer had classes to attend.
"So, you see a lot of children carrying these dirty yellow plastic jerrycans" with up to 25 litres of water, he said.
"I've seen children pushing these jerrycans with a broken wheelchair, trying to bring water, which is one of the major issues... in the Gaza Strip."
Crickx said it was heartbreaking to see children, some as young as five or six, trying to find food for their families.
They are "walking in huge piles of garbage and trying to get whatever they can," he said.
"These children are extremely impacted by the violence and the bombings and insecurity they have been through for a year." (AFP)

The Lebanese army said a soldier was killed Monday in an Israeli strike that targeted a motorcycle as it went through an army checkpoint in south Lebanon near the border.
"A soldier was killed when a drone belonging to the Israeli enemy targeted a motorcycle as it was passing through... the Lebanese army checkpoint" in the Wazzani area close to the Israeli border, a statement on X said. Israel-Hezbollah War Live: Israeli troops conduct 'pre-invasion forays' into Lebanon
Israeli forces have been conducting small-scale incursions into southern Lebanon, including into Hezbollah's tunnels, ahead of a possible Israeli ground operation in the area, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday, citing anonymous sources.
The purpose of these operations was to gain information in preparation for a possible invasion, the sources reportedly told the WSJ, which could begin as soon as this week.
According to the report, as cited by the Jerusalem Post, such operations have been carried out in the past few months as well as more recently, as part of Israel's attempt at striking the terror group embedded on its border with Lebanon.

Lebanon's Prime Minister Najib Mikati on Monday called for a ceasefire in the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah during a meeting with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot in Beirut.
"The key to the solution is to put an end to the Israeli aggression against Lebanon and to revive the appeal launched by the United States and France... in favour of a ceasefire," Mikati said, according to a statement from his office.
Barrot arrived in Beirut Sunday, the first foreign diplomat to visit Lebanon since Israel escalated its strikes against Hezbollah strongholds.
Mikati added that the "priority is applying resolution 1701" of the United Nations Security Council, which ended the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah.
The French envoy's visit came as a deadly strike hit a building in the centre of the Lebanese capital. (AFP)

Israel's Defence Minister Yoav Gallant on Monday said operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon would continue and that the killing of the group's leader Hassan Nasrallah was not the "final" step.

Hezbollah on Sunday confirmed the death of high-ranking official Nabil Kaouk in an Israeli airstrike, a day after the Lebanese militant group acknowledged the killings of multiple commanders, including longtime leader Hassan Nasrallah.
Israel struck Houthi targets in Yemen in response to the militants’ recent attacks, and is continuing to carry out strikes on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon.
Meanwhile, the number of people displaced by the conflict from southern Lebanon has more than doubled and now stands at more than 211,000, according to the United Nations.

Some 100,000 Lebanese and Syrian nationals have now fled to Syria from Lebanon amid Israeli airstrikes, the United Nations refugee chief said Monday.
