Iran war: Oil prices plunge and US stock futures jump as US and Iran agree to 2-week ceasefire

Oil prices fell sharply while US stock futures surged after President Donald Trump delayed threatened strikes on Iran. US crude dropped by more than 15%, while futures for the S&P 500 rose 2.2% and the Dow gained around 2%.

Trump said he would hold off attacking Iranian infrastructure if Tehran agrees to a two-week ceasefire and reopens the Strait of Hormuz. Iran signalled acceptance of the truce and indicated limited access to the key oil route.

Brent and US crude prices both dropped steeply, though they remain above pre-war levels. Asian markets reacted positively, with strong gains in Japan and South Korea.

Earlier volatility reflected fears of escalation after Trump’s stark warnings. Rising oil prices had fuelled inflation concerns, pushing up fuel costs and bond yields, though hopes of a ceasefire have since eased pressure on global markets.

Tehran has also agreed to begin talks with Washington on Friday in Pakistan. Trump said he paused planned strikes after requests from Pakistan’s leadership, linking the ceasefire to Iran ensuring safe passage through the strait. The conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel has sharply escalated, with fresh strikes, threats and growing fears of a wider regional crisis. US President Donald Trump has issued a strong warning to Iran, saying “a whole civilization will die tonight” if Tehran does not agree to his demands before a deadline set in Washington. His warning comes amid pressure on Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil route, or face major attacks targeting infrastructure.

Iran has rejected a proposed ceasefire and instead called for a permanent end to the war. At the same time, the US has expanded its threat list, with Trump saying power plants, bridges and key infrastructure could be targeted. The remarks have drawn concern from the United Nations, with Secretary-General António Guterres warning that attacks on civilian infrastructure violate international law.

On the ground, the situation is worsening. Iranian cities, including Tehran and other regions, have seen multiple airstrikes, with reports of casualties and damage to both infrastructure and residential areas. Railway bridges, train stations and highways have been hit, indicating a shift towards targeting transport systems. In one such strike in Kashan, two people were killed after a railway bridge was hit.

The conflict is also spreading beyond Iran’s borders. In the United Arab Emirates, a ballistic missile struck a telecommunications facility in Sharjah, injuring two people. Maritime security is also under threat, with a container vessel hit by a projectile near Iran’s Kish Island in the Persian Gulf. Shipping routes in the region remain at risk, with more than 20 vessels reportedly attacked since the conflict began.

Iran has responded with strong warnings. The Revolutionary Guard said it could “deprive the US and its allies of oil and gas in the region for years” if attacks continue. It also warned Gulf countries that previous restraint in choosing targets may no longer apply.

At the same time, fear is growing among ordinary Iranians. Residents in Tehran have begun storing water and preparing for power cuts, worried that infrastructure strikes could disrupt daily life. Internet access remains restricted, making it difficult for people to get information.

There are also signs of wider global impact. Fuel shortages have been reported in parts of Europe, and countries are calling for de-escalation. As the deadline approaches, the situation remains tense, with the possibility of further strikes and retaliation keeping the region on edge.
