JATTI UMRA: Residents of this border village are excited about Wednesday’s India-Pakistan cricket clash but insist that the match is not the battle minus bullets that it is being made out to be.
Jatti Umra has a strong Pakistan connection. That’s because this is former Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif’s ancestral village. Sharif has strong bonds here and has helped many young men from here get jobs in the Gulf.
He remains a dear friend.
Massa Singh, 85, and Sharif’s father Mian Mohammad Sharif were pals. He said more than two dozen youngsters from the village work in Sharif family factories in Doha, Qatar. Many others pin their hopes on the Pakistan politician to land lucrative jobs abroad.
