Earthquake in Nepal kills at least 140 people

A powerful 6.4 magnitude earthquake in Nepal caused casualties and widespread damage in the mountainous country. At least 140 people were killed due to the quake that jolted Nepal just before midnight on Friday.

The tremor that struck western Nepal destroyed hundreds of houses. It is being considered as the most devastating tremor since 2015 in the Himalayan country's remote mountainous region.

​Tremor brings back 2015 memories​

As per the National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre, Jajarkot district was the epicentre of the earthquake recorded at 11:47 pm. The incident brought back memories of the 2015 earthquake that killed around 9,000 people and injured more than 22,000 people.

​159 aftershocks were recorded​

The National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Center reported that around 159 aftershocks were recorded following the earthquake.

​Quake hits India's national capital too​

The impact of the quake was also felt in India's New Delhi along with neighbouring districts of Kathmandu.

​Nepal Army carries out rescue work​

Nepal administration informed that the Army mobilised its personnel to carry out rescue works at the incident site. According to state-run Nepal Television, the Jajarkot and Rukum districts were worst hit by the quake. ​

Rescue operations underway in incident sites​

Rescuers were seen digging through rubble with their bare hands to rescue survivors. Helicopters were arranged to move injured people to the hospitals.

​PM takes tour ​of quake-hit regions​

Following the incident, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Saturday toured the quake-hit region. He took cognisance of the extent of the damages.

Prachanda's office appeals to donate funds​

The Prime Minister's office has appealed to political parties, social workers and the public to donate funds to help arrange food, water, clothes and tents for the survivors.



"Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has expressed his deep sorrow over the loss of lives and property in the earthquake on Friday night and has mobilised all the three security bodies for the immediate rescue and relief," reads a post from the prime minister's office on X.

Prime Minister Dahal on Saturday also visited the hospital to meet the survivors. He was seen interacting with injured people.
