The demonstrations in Bangladesh on Monday reached a critical point as protesters defied the curfew and breached Prime Minister Hasina's palace, leaving her no choice but to resign and flee the country.
The turmoil escalated further when the jubilant crowd destroyed a statue of Bangladesh's founding father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Dhaka.
According to AFP reporters, soldiers and police with armored vehicles had barricaded routes to Prime Minister Hasina's office in Dhaka with barbed wire. Despite these measures, vast crowds flooded the streets and tore down the barriers.
Local media estimated that up to 400,000 protesters were on the streets, although this figure could not be independently verified.
