The princess revealed that she discovered her cancer during another medical procedure, specifically describing it as a "major abdominal surgery." Although the specific type of cancer was not disclosed, experts emphasize that such occurrences are not uncommon.

Dr Elena Ratner, a gynecologic oncologist at Yale Cancer Center, remarked on the prevalence of unexpected cancer diagnoses. She cited cases where patients undergo surgery for conditions like endometriosis, only to discover cancerous tissue during post-operative analysis.

Kate also mentioned undergoing "a course of preventive chemotherapy," a practice known in medical settings as adjuvant chemotherapy. Dr. Eric Winer, director of the Yale Cancer Center, explained that this treatment aims to prevent further complications and reduce the likelihood of cancer recurrence.

Dr Michael Birrer, director of the Winthrop P Rockefeller Cancer Institute, elaborated on the significance of chemotherapy in targeting microscopic cancer cells that may remain after surgery.

The princess's statement also highlighted her concern for her family, expressing the challenges of explaining her diagnosis to her children—George, Charlotte, and Louis. Dr Ratner emphasized that such concerns are common among cancer patients, reflecting the emotional toll of the disease.
