Illegal Mexicans or legal Indians: Controversial poll resurfaces as LA burns, 'Be very careful what you wish for'
In one such poll conducted as recent as April 22, 84 per cent chose illegal Mexicans and 16 per cent legal Indians. "Illegal Mexicans are welcomed, Legal Indians are denied in most powerful country. Result infront of you," one wrote on X sharing the video of cars on fire in LA.
"Whole west make racism against Indian but the thing is that Indians respect law of the land work hard make progress, don’t run for easy money," another wrote.
In a similar poll conducted in December 2024, 82 per cent picked illegal Mexicans. Some social media users explained that the context of those polls was different as the polls were conducted mostly on H-1b rows. Legal Indians take up Americans' jobs and they can't be deported and that's why illegal Mexicans were picked in those polls, some said.
The LA riots started from protests against ICE raids in Los Angeles. About 35 Mexicans were reportedly detained in these raids, following which Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said migrants are not criminals."Mexicans living in the United States are good men and women, honest people who went to the United States to seek a better life for themselves and to support their families. They are not criminals! They are good men and women," the Mexican president said.
Donald Trump deployed National Guard troops in Los Angeles, which started a Dem-Republicans tussle with Dem Governor Gavin Newsom resisting the deployment of the troops. While Newsom threatened to sue Trump and asked border czar Tom Homan to arrest him, Trump said he would have arrested Newsom had he been Tom. Trump defended the decision of sending the National Guards to LA and said if it was not done, Los Angeles would have been completely obliterated.
