'Six month phase out period': Trump orders halt to Anthropic tech across US govt
US President Donald Trump has ordered every federal agency to “immediately” stop using technology developed by AI firm Anthropic. In a scathing post on Truth Social, Trump branded the company’s leadership “Leftwing nut jobs”, escalating the growing standoff between the White House and the Pentagon’s AI suppliers.
“THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA WILL NEVER ALLOW A RADICAL LEFT, WOKE COMPANY TO DICTATE HOW OUR GREAT MILITARY FIGHTS AND WINS WARS!” Trump wrote. He insisted that decisions about how America wages war “belong to YOUR COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF”, accusing Anthropic of trying to “STRONG-ARM the Department of War” into following its terms of service “instead of our Constitution”.
Trump claimed the company’s “selfishness is putting AMERICAN LIVES at risk” and placing national security “in JEOPARDY”. He directed “EVERY Federal Agency” to cease using Anthropic’s technology at once, adding there would be a six-month phase-out for departments currently relying on its products. “We don’t need it, we don’t want it, and will not do business with them again!” he wrote, warning of “major civil and criminal consequences” if the company failed to cooperate.
The showdown follows days of mounting tension between the administration and Anthropic, whose chatbot Claude has been adopted in parts of the US government, including classified settings. The dispute centres on safeguards the company says are necessary to prevent its AI being used for mass surveillance of Americans or in fully autonomous weapons systems.
Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei has drawn a firm line, saying the company “cannot in good conscience accede” to Pentagon demands for broader usage rights. The Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth, has reportedly warned that refusal could lead to the contract being cancelled or the firm being labelled a “supply chain risk”.
The clash has divided Silicon Valley. Elon Musk publicly backed the administration, while Sam Altman voiced sympathy for Anthropic’s safety concerns, saying he largely trusted the company’s intentions.=
