Trump blasts ‘meaningless vote’ as House moves to curb Iran war powers
US President Donald Trump lashed out at Congress after the House approved a war powers resolution aimed at halting US military action against Iran, calling the vote “meaningless” and accusing both Democrats and a small group of Republicans of undermining his efforts to end the conflict.
The resolution passed on Wednesday by a 215-208 vote, with four Republicans joining Democrats in a rare rebuke of Trump's handling of the three-month-long conflict with Iran. While the measure would not immediately stop military operations, it represents growing unease in Congress over the war and could set the stage for a broader debate over presidential war powers.
Reacting on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “Yesterday, in a meaningless vote, the House voted, 4 bad Republicans and all of the Dumocrats, to limit my War Powers, right in the middle of my final negotiations to end the War with the Islamic Republic of Iran. Who would do such an unpatriotic thing. They know where the negotiations stand.”
He added: “The Democrats are fueled by Trump Derangement Syndrome. They would rather have our Country fail than give me another, of many, victories. The four Republicans, that’s a whole other story - They’re GRANDSTANDERS! They should be ashamed of themselves. MAGA!!! President DJT.”
The vote marked the first time the House has approved a war powers resolution seeking to curb US military action against Iran. Democratic lawmakers argued that the conflict has dragged on for too long, contributing to rising fuel prices and economic uncertainty at home.
“Enough is enough,” said Representative Gregory Meeks of New York, the senior Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, who led the effort. He urged Trump to end what he described as a “war of choice”.
The resolution now heads to the Senate, where a similar measure has already gained support from a handful of Republican senators.
