Hyderabad drugs scandal

On July 4, 2017, a Hyderabad based drug racket worth several crores was busted by the Telangana Excise (Enforcement) Department. The drug racket was run by a three-member group - Calvin Mascrenhas, Mohammed Abdul Quddus and Mohammed Abdul Wahed. The gang used to supply drugs, including LSD, to celebrities from the Tollywood film industry apart from schools and colleges. About 700 dots of LSD worth Rs 20 lakh and 35gm of MDMA worth Rs 1.4 lakh were recovered from the gang. During interrogation, one of the accused Calvin Mascrenhas revealed the names of 8 other involved in the crime. In his statement, Mascrenhas said that he used to get the drugs from Germany and Netherlands and sell it to another alleged drug peddler Bendenmen, who in turn used to supply these drugs to Tollywood actors. Another accused named Peeyush used to supply drugs to schools and colleges.

During the investigation of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Excise department, the mobile numbers of several prominent personalities from the Telugu film industry were found in the contact list of the Calvin. The list included top director Puri Jagannadh, Ravi Teja, Charmme Kaur, P Navdeep, Tarun Kumar, A Tanish and P Subbaraju, Mumaith Khan, cinematographer Shyam K Naidu, singer Ananda Krishna Nandu and art director Chinna N Dharmarao. At least 12 of these celebrities have been asked to appear before the SIT excise department between July 19 to 27.
