Panel gaps around the bonnet, doors and tailgate should be even in a factory-finished car. Misaligned panels, uneven gaps or doors that do not shut properly may indicate previous removal or adjustment after an impact.

Paintwork can also indicate repairs. Differences in colour, finish or texture between panels often suggest repainting. Overspray on rubber linings or inside edges, along with variations felt by touch, can point to work carried out after damage. Inspection under the bonnet provides further clarity. Bolts around hinges and fenders are typically uniform from the factory. Tool marks, chipped paint or signs of loosening indicate parts have been removed, suggesting prior repair work.

Structural areas in the engine bay and boot require closer attention. Chassis sections and inner panels should appear consistent. Welding marks, uneven sealant or bent metal surfaces may indicate significant damage. In the rear, the spare wheel well should be checked for signs of repair. Glass and lighting components can offer additional clues. Windows generally share similar manufacturing dates, and a single newer unit may indicate replacement. Differences in headlights or tail lamps between sides can also point to repairs.

The underside of the car may reveal issues not visible above. Bent suspension parts, uneven coating or fresh paint in specific areas can suggest earlier damage. These factors can influence long-term driving behaviour. A test drive remains important. If the car pulls to one side, the steering is not centred or vibrations are present, it may indicate alignment issues, which can be linked to accident-related damage.

Service records provide supporting information. Entries related to panel replacement, repainting or insurance claims should be reviewed. Lack of documentation or reluctance to share records may be a concern. Interior checks can also help identify issues. Misaligned trims, loose fittings or warning lights may indicate previous repairs. Airbag condition is critical, as improper replacement after deployment poses a safety risk.

A professional inspection is recommended even after initial checks. Technicians can identify structural issues, confirm repairs and detect hidden faults.
