Sedans strike back! How these two models triumphed in SUV-crazy India
For years, the Indian car market has been moving in one direction. Bigger stance, higher ground clearance and SUV badges everywhere. Almost every new car today wants to look like an SUV. Hatchbacks have turned into crossovers, compact cars are called “micro SUVs”, and slowly and steadily SUVs are becoming the default answer to most car-buying questions in India. However, 2025 delivered a rather unexpected twist.
India’s best-selling car last year was not an SUV. The country’s most popular luxury car wasn’t one either. Instead, two sedans quietly topped the charts in their respective segments. The Maruti Suzuki Dzire became India’s highest-selling passenger vehicle, while the Mercedes-Benz E-Class LWB took the top honours as the top-selling luxury car.
At a time when SUVs account for more than 55 per cent of India’s passenger vehicle market, the success of these two sedans says something important. Market hype and actual buyer behaviour are not always the same thing.
The Maruti Suzuki Dzire ended calendar year 2025 with more than 2.14 lakh units sold. It comfortably stayed ahead of some of the country’s biggest SUV names, including the Hyundai Creta and the Tata Nexon. Interestingly, the last time a sedan topped India’s annual sales chart was in 2019, and even then, it was the Dzire.
The achievement becomes even bigger when you look at how aggressively the market has shifted toward SUVs in recent years. Carmakers are launching SUVs across every budget and size category. But despite all that, the Dzire kept selling in huge numbers month after month.
The sedan crossed 15,000 units in January 2025 and continued building momentum through the year. Sales touched nearly 17,000 units in April and crossed 18,000 units in May. During the festive season, the numbers went above the 20,000 mark. October recorded 20,791 units, while November reached 21,082 units. December too remained strong with over 19,000 units sold.
The reason is quite simple. The Dzire continues to get the basics right. Fuel efficiency still matters massively in India. So do maintenance costs and reliability. The Dzire’s low running costs, widespread service network and stress-free drivability continue to attract buyers across cities and smaller towns alike. The growing popularity of CNG variants has also played a major role here.
Yes, fleet demand is also a key factor. The Dzire remains one of the most preferred cars for taxi operators and app-based mobility services but reducing its success only to fleet sales would be unfair.
The latest-generation model has also brought in more private buyers with updated styling, new features and stronger focus on safety. Buyers today may admire SUVs, but many still end up choosing cars that are economical and easy to live with every day.
Interestingly, a similar trend can be seen at the other end of the market as well. In India’s luxury segment, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class LWB became the best-selling luxury car in FY2026. This happened despite luxury SUVs dominating conversations and social media attention. The reason once again comes down to Indian buyer preferences.
India continues to be a chauffeur-driven luxury market. Rear-seat comfort matters a lot more than aggressive styling or off-road capability for many buyers in this segment. The E-Class Long Wheelbase delivers exactly what this set of customers want. It offers generous rear-seat space, akin to a mini-S-Class, at a relatively lesser price point.
Other than that, sedans also continue to offer certain advantages from behind the wheel. Compared to SUVs, sedans usually have a lower centre of gravity. That improves stability at higher speeds and gives drivers more confidence while cornering. While SUVs offer commanding visibility and road presence, several driving enthusiasts still prefer the balanced driving feel of a sedan.
For all the attention SUVs receive today, 2025 proved there is still something special about a well-sorted sedan. The Dzire delivered efficiency and everyday ease. The E-Class LWB delivers comfort and a proper driving feel. Two completely different cars, two very different buyers, but the same result. When the package feels right, Indian customers are still happy to choose a sedan over the SUV crowd.
