Formula 1: George Russell wins Australian GP as Mercedes secures 1-2 finish
Australian Grand Prix marked the start of a new era in Formula 1 with a dominant performance from George Russell, who converted his pole position into a comfortable victory at Melbourne’s Albert Park Circuit.
Driving for Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, Russell overcame an early challenge from Charles Leclerc of Scuderia Ferrari. The two drivers traded the lead several times during the opening 10 laps in an intense fight at the front. Leclerc initially grabbed the lead at Turn 1 after a strong start, but Russell soon fought back using extra electrical energy on lap two. The Ferrari driver reclaimed the position a lap later, keeping the battle alive in the early stages of the race.
The race also delivered disappointment for local fans after Oscar Piastri crashed on the way to the grid, ruling him out of his home race before the start.
The decisive moment came when a virtual safety car was deployed on lap 12 following the retirement of Isack Hadjar. Mercedes reacted quickly and brought both Russell and teammate Kimi Antonelli into the pits. Ferrari chose to keep both cars out, a decision that ultimately cost them the chance to challenge for victory.
Russell controlled the race from that point and eventually crossed the finish line comfortably ahead of Antonelli, sealing a Mercedes one-two finish. Leclerc secured third place, finishing ahead of teammate Lewis Hamilton, who took fourth after closing in during the final laps.
Lando Norris finished fifth for McLaren, while Max Verstappen recovered from starting 20th on the grid to take sixth for Red Bull Racing.
Further down the order, Oliver Bearman finished seventh for Haas F1 Team. Rookie Arvid Lindblad impressed on debut by finishing eighth for Racing Bulls. Gabriel Bortoleto claimed ninth to give Audi F1 Team its first points in its debut race, while Pierre Gasly completed the top ten for Alpine F1 Team.
