Bilateral trade in local currencies: PM Modi’s big push during Mauritius PM’s India visit; special package unveiled
India and Mauritius will soon begin trading in local currencies, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Thursday, describing it as the next big step in strengthening financial and economic linkages between the two countries.
Speaking alongside Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam in Varanasi, PM Modi said the decision builds on last year’s launch of UPI and RuPay card services in Mauritius and would further ease transactions between businesses and citizens of both nations.
“We will now work towards enabling trade in local currencies,” he stated, adding that the move would support smoother bilateral trade flows.
Special Economic Package for growth
PM Modi also unveiled a Special Economic Package, calling it an investment in a shared future. The package will fund major projects including a 500-bed Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam National Hospital, a Veterinary School and Animal Hospital, and an AYUSH Centre of Excellence.
He emphasised that these initiatives will “strengthen infrastructure, create new employment opportunities, and improve healthcare facilities.”
Focus on infrastructure and connectivityThe leaders also agreed to advance several infrastructure projects such as the Chagos Marine Protected Area, the ATC tower at SSR International Airport, and the expansion of highways and ring roads in Mauritius.

PM Modi confirmed assistance in establishing a 17.5 MW floating solar power plant at Tamarind Falls, underlining India’s commitment to the island’s renewable energy transition.
Education, research and skill-building
PM Modi highlighted India’s role in human resource development, noting that more than 5,000 Mauritians have trained in India. At present, 500 civil servants are undergoing courses in Mussoorie.
A new Directorate of Science and Technology will be set up in Mauritius, while IIT Madras and the Indian Institute of Plantation Management have signed agreements with the University of Mauritius to boost research and innovation.
