Agartala: A herd of wild elephants trampled a 70-year-old villager to death in a village in Tripura’s Khowai district, police said here on Monday.
The deceased, identified as Niranjan Chowdhury, was on his way back home from a local market on Sunday night when he was attacked by the herd around 8.30 pm, police said.
Later, villagers burst firecrackers and managed to chase away the herd.
They then took the injured villager to the Teliamura hospital where he was declared dead.
Following the incident, panic gripped the locality and irate villagers resorted to agitation against the forest department for not taking necessary measures to prevent man-elephant conflict.
Villages in the foothills of Atharamura have been facing such attacks for the last several years. Despite repeated appeals, the state govt has yet to take steps, the villagers alleged, adding that more than 30 incidents of elephants going on the rampage were recorded in the area in the last one year.
