AGARTALA: Tripura remembered the Indian heroes of 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War on Thursday on its 50th victory day (Vijay Diwas) who had sacrificed their lives to liberate East Pakistan from the clutches of Pakistani army with a series of programmes at the Assistant High Commissionrate here.
Tourism minister Pranajit Singharoy attended the wreath-laying ceremony at Albert Ekka Park here and paid tribute to them saying India had sacrificed a lot for the creation of Bangladesh and is still working to further strengthen bilateral relations.
“The Bangladesh government is reciprocating the contribution of India, especially Tripura, for the 1971 Liberation War. We had sheltered 15 lakh refugees from East Pakistan, which was more than Tripura’s population. With the support of the Indian Army, a large number of training camps were set up in several parts of west and southern parts of the state,” Singharoy reiterated.
He pointed out that the Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre has been working on a multifarious development programme to improve bilateral trade, commerce, human resource, tourism and cultural development through Tripura.
The bridge over river Feni has already become operational to connect Chittagong sea port by road from South Tripura. The track-laying work on Agartala-Akhura railways has been going on priority basis while SEZ in Sabroom is all set to be functional to attract foreign investment taking the advantage of sea port access in Bangladesh, Singharoy stated.
The minister added that the Tripura government has decided to host the Indo-Bangla tourism and cultural festival here in February next to further strengthen relationships with Bangladesh.
