AHMEDABAD: The local crime branch (LCB) of Gandhinagar police arrested four persons for impersonating policemen on Thursday. Police suspect the group to be involved in more cases of cheating.
According to police, an LCB team was on a vehicle-checking drive near Shahpur circle on Thursday night when they spotted a car taking a sudden U-turn because of the checking that was going on.

Finding the behaviour odd, the police team chased the car and caught its four occupants who have been identified as Sunil Parmar, 36, a resident of Gomtipur; Dipak Jadav, 22; Sanjay Indrapa, 21; and Jagdish Chauhan, 30 — all residents of Chandkheda. Rs 25,000 cash was recovered from the arrested men.
"During questioning, they confessed they had posed as policemen on June 5 and taken two mango vendors — Bhavin and Ajay Kanani — from the roadside at Infocity to Adalaj and threatened them with a police case if they did not cooperate. The fake cops not only took Rs 27,600 cash from the vendors but also eight boxes of mangoes," said an LCB official.
Police identified Sunil Parmar as the mastermind. "A diploma holder in electronics, he had also dabbled in marketing of ayurvedic medicines but did not get any success. He then decided to try his luck with impersonating the police and sought help of his friends for the crime. We suspect the group might be involved in more cases," said Ashutosh Parmar, inspector of Gandhinagar LCB.
