I have expressed my views before the party high command and in the next meeting, if they accept my proposal, I will step down as GPCC president. However, I have not submitted anything in writing.”
Leader of the opposition in the assembly, Paresh Dhanani admitted he had failed in his responsibilities as leader of opposition and offered to quit. Dhanani, who was also the Congress candidate for the Amreli seat, added, “Taking moral responsibility for the party’s defeat on all Lok Sabha and four assembly seats, I have offered my resignation as the leader of opposition . I will keep working for the party as a committed worker. Owing to my position, I was expected to deliver results, but I failed to do so. I will accept whatever decision the party leadership takes in this regard,” he said.
Congress candidates lost all the 26 Lok Sabha seats in Gujarat while the BJP kept its 2014 record intact, winning all the seats. On many seats the BJP improved its victory margins from the 2014 election.
