AHMEDABAD: A professor of the
Gujarat University has moved HC challenging the move of the Gujarat University vice chancellor to conduct interviews for the career advancement scheme for the Gujarat University professors. The interviews which were conducted by Gujarat University were violating the norms laid down by the University Grant Commission.
The head of the economics department Kartik Bhatt filed a petition challenging the move to conduct the interviews. The Gujarat University had decided to conduct interview for the career advancement scheme formed a panel without informing the deans of the respective faculties. The officials said that the last promotion to the employees was given in 2003 and since then there were no promotion under the scheme which were due in 2009.
The officials said that while giving these promotions GU had to take into consideration the research and the publication of the individual professors. But the present VC M N Patel conducted the interviews for 45 professors without verifying the research and publication of each of these professors. Even former syndicate member Manish Doshi had raised the objection over the manner in which these interviews were being conducted. However, when the GU decided to go ahead, the same was challenged in the courts.
