Gandhinagar: The state cabinet which met on Wednesday, approved the proposal to set up a separate commissionerate to promote growth of the services sector. It will function on the lines of the industries commissionerate, the facilitating body for industrial growth in Gujarat.
The govt also announced Rs 100 crore for a ‘Service Sector Growth Fund’ under the new commissionerate for the 2026-27 financial year.
After the cabinet meeting, state govt spokesperson Jitu Vaghani said that the post of a service commissioner will also be set up soon. “Just as the industries commissionerate serves the industrial sector in Gujarat, a separate service commissionerate will now be established to drive the growth and development of the services sector,” Vaghani said.
He added that the service commissionerate will focus on information technology (IT), tourism, logistics and other service industries. The move, he said, is aimed at ensuring balanced and diversified economic growth as Gujarat seeks to strengthen its service economy alongside its established manufacturing base.
He said the proposal for a dedicated commissionerate emerged from recommendations made under the Gujarat Rajya Institution for Transformation (GRIT) initiative, which suggested creation of a separate institutional framework for the comprehensive development of the services sector. GRIT is a dedicated state-level think tank set up by the state govt to steer developmental strategies and align state priorities with the vision of Viksit Bharat.
Vaghani said that apart from providing easier access to growth capital for MSMEs and startups in sectors such as IT, tourism and logistics, the dedicated fund will also help generate employment opportunities for youth, encourage innovation and entrepreneurship, and attract investments in the services sector.
