Ahmedabad: An 88-year-old man living in an old-age home in Pethapur area of
Gandhinagar committed suicide by jumping into the Sabarmati from the riverfront walkway beneath the Ellis Bridge on Wednesday night. He had been suffering from prostate-related ailment for the past 10 years, said cops.
According to
Sabarmati Riverfront (West) police,
Suryakant Shah had moved to the old-age home in Pethapur two years ago.
His elder son Rajesh Shah, a resident of
Ratnadeep Society in Isanpur, works with a private firm in Naroda. His younger son, Nitin Shah, lives in Udaipur where he works in a tiles manufacturing unit. Suryakant’s wife died in 1996.
“Suryakant worked at a textile mill in the city till the early 1990s and after the mills shut down, he took up casual labour. Due to domestic issues, his family sent him to an old age home in Pethapur,” said a police officer of Sabarmati riverfront (west). On Wednesday afternoon, Suryakant told the staff at the old-age home that his son was coming to take him home.
After some time, he left the old age home and went to the riverfront. A security guard at the riverfront spotted him near the walkway trying to scale the metal grilles. However, before the guard could stop him, Suryakant jumped into the river. The fire brigade personnel fished out his body and the police informed his family members.
Rajesh told the cops that Suryakant had been suffering from prostate-related illness for the past 10 years
