AHMEDABAD: The preference for male children has caused a mother to be deserted by her husband, left to raise her 6-year-old daughter by sewing clother.
Kanchan Soni, 36, has approached the women’s police station with a complaint stating that she has been deserted by her husband and in-laws just because she gave birth to a girl child.
Soni, who now lives at an Kala Sagar Apartments in Ranip with her daughter, has alleged that her husband Kapil Soni, father-in-law Bhanvarlal Soni, mother-in-law Pista Soni, brother-in-law Maunik and his wife Rimpi and a third brother-in-law, residents of Sujata Flats in Shahibaug had tortured her for dowry of Rs 10 lakh.
“Soni stated that she had married Kapil in 2006. Soon after the wedding, her in-laws started torturing her for dowry. In 2011, she gave birth to a girl. She alleged that she had pay the hospital bills by selling her ear-rings and borrowing money from her father, Kushalchand Soni, as her husband and in-laws refused to pay,” said a senior women’s police official.
She and her husband later went to live at at in Ranip, but he soon deserted her at the instance of her in-laws. “Soni stated that she has been forced for about eight months to live with her six-year-old daughter alone.. We summoned the in-laws for questioning and after verifying the details stated in the FIR, we will take further action,” a senior women’s police official said.
