ALLAHABAD: The outrage over the reported custodial deaths of two local youths, Sanjay Nishad and Ashok Nishad, on Monday in Ghoorpur police station continued on Tuesday.
The Congress Legislature Party leader Pramod Tiwari and Congress MLA, Anugrah Narayan Singh have written to principal secretary, Vidhan Sabha asking for a debate in the House on the issue and arrest of the accused policemen.
They also sought compensation for the victims' families.
Issuing a statement on Tuesday, the Congress leaders alleged that local police in connivance with sand and liquor mafia regularly implicate local youths in false cases so that they do not raise their voice against oppression and exploitation.
They said the barbaric police act has led to resentment among the people.
On the other hand, at a meeting of Congress workers here on Tuesday the speakers expressed shock over the open violation of human rights in Ghoorpur police station. It is a sensitive issue which demands a thorough probe along with a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for each victim's family, said Congress leader Mukund Tiwari. He added that the issue would be brought to the notice of UP governor as well.
Condemning the incident, All India Kisan Mazdoor Sabha secretary Suresh Chandra said it shows the anti-people, colonial character and unlawful role of the police in the state. AIKMS has demanded a judicial probe into the incident.
Meanwhile, DIG, Allahabad, Brij Bhushan Sharma has suspended nine policemen including station officer Ghoorpur police station Vinod Kumar Dubey along with sub-inspector Vivekanand Tiwari and seven constables for their alleged role in the custodial deaths.
