Amritsar: The Punjab state vigilance bureau on Tuesday registered a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act and criminal conspiracy charges against seven police officials of Chattiwind police station of Amritsar district. In an official release issued on Tuesday, a department spokesperson said the case was registered on the basis of video evidence.
Four cops have been arrested.
The spokesperson said Gurharpreet Singh of Chattiwind village had damaged a CCTV camera outside a store run by Avtar Singh and Kanwalpreet Singh of the same village on August 22, 2018. An upset and angry Kanwalpreet had gone to Gurharpreet’s house along with other villagers. But Gurharpreet and his accomplices had attacked Kanwalpreet, Baldev Singh, and Sukhwant Singh, who were accompanying him, and fled from the spot. A case under various sections of IPC was registered against Gurharpreet and others.
Later, ASIs Mahinder Singh and Kuldeep Singh (now dead), head constables Palwinder Singh and Ram Singh, constables Rajbir Singh, Harpinder Singh and Palwinder Singh, and home guard Lata Singh took Rs 65,000 in bribe on various occasions from complainant Baldev’s brother Sukhdev Singh, who prepared video evidence against the cops.
The bureau has arrested Ram Singh, Palwinder, Harpinder and Lata Singh.
