BJP eyes organisational strength ahead of 2027 Punjab assembly polls
AMRITSAR: With Union Home Minister Amit Shah making it clear that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will contest the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections independently, the focus has now shifted to the party’s organisational strength in the state. Analysts say weak election management and fragile grassroots structures have repeatedly undermined its prospects.
Shah's assertion that the BJP would go solo in Punjab marks a significant political shift, especially after decades of alliance politics with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). However, political observers note that if the party intends to make a meaningful impact, it must first address deep organisational shortcomings and rebuild its cadre base.
At recent electoral history reflects the challenge before the party. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, senior BJP leader and former Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley contested from Amritsar but suffered defeat. Despite the loss, he continued as India’s finance minister. Similarly, in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, former diplomat and senior BJP leader Hardeep Singh Puri contested from Amritsar but was defeated. He currently serves as a Union cabinet minister. The pattern repeated in 2024, when another former diplomat, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, entered the electoral arena from Amritsar but lost; he was later appointed Lieutenant Governor of Delhi.
Senior BJP Sikh leader Avtar Singh believes the party must rethink its strategy to expand its base in Punjab. He said the BJP should strengthen its organisational structure and prioritise promoting credible Sikh faces, rather than relying heavily on political turncoats.
He argued that any candidate, including high-profile ones, without a strong local organisational network, often struggles to convert political stature into electoral success.
Avtar added: “The party must bring forward clean, committed, and inspirational Sikh leadership if it wants to expand in rural and Panthic belts.” He also noted that the BJP needs to engage seriously with farmers’ concerns and Sikh community issues to shed the perception of being merely a Hindu-centric party in Punjab.
The situation was similar in assembly elections. In the 2017 Punjab Assembly polls, the BJP contested 23 seats in alliance with SAD but managed to win only three. In the 2022 Assembly elections, the party contested separately after the breakdown of the alliance but secured just two seats, reflecting its limited reach beyond select urban areas.
A senior party source said that after Shah's public announcement, a major overhaul of the Punjab BJP unit, up to the grassroots level, is expected, as the party has previously failed to deliver the desired results.
