AMRITSAR: An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of the Amritsar Police Commissionerate was reportedly shot dead by unidentified bike-borne assailants near Majitha in Amritsar district early Sunday morning while he was on his way to duty from Batala.
Senior Superintendent of Police (Amritsar Rural) Suhail Qasim Mir said the deceased officer, identified as ASI Joga Singh, was posted with the Amritsar Police Commissionerate. He hailed from village Ghaniye-ke-Bangar near Batala in Gurdaspur district.
According to police, the attackers intercepted Joga Singh’s scooter on the Fatehgarh Churian–Majitha road, around one kilometre before Majitha. The assailants allegedly opened fire at close range, hitting him with two bullets — one in the chest and another in the waist.
ASI Joga Singh collapsed on the roadside and succumbed to his injuries before help could reach him. The incident reportedly took place around 6 am when the road was relatively deserted.
Following the incident, senior police officials rushed to the spot and sealed the area. Forensic teams were called in to collect evidence, while bullet shells were also recovered from the scene.
SSP Suhail Qasim Mir said police had launched an investigation and were probing all possible angles, including personal enmity, road rage, and any other motive behind the killing. CCTV footage from nearby areas is also being examined to identify the attackers.
