AMRITSAR: Does the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) president Simranjit Singh Mann’s victory in Sangrur byelection indicates at the concept of radicalisation once again gaining ground in Punjab — at least in the Sangrur Lok Sabha constituency — even as the show of unprecedented sympathy towards late Punjabi rapper Shubdheep Singh Sidhu Mosse Wala, known for glorifying gun culture and violence through his songs, has exposed the underlying sentiments of discontentment among people, especially the youth?

Political analyst Manohar Lal Sharma says "If we analyze the turnout of events in the state in past few months we will see a sudden spurt in criminal activities, gang wars, intimidating calls even to former MLA’s and former deputy chief minister of Punjab, all these indicate at the people's proclivity towards hardliners and Mann’s victory has only vindicated the same”.
Sharma who has been the advisor to the former chief minister of Punjab Harcharan Singh Brar opined that the victory of radical ideology was a clarion call for both the state and Center governments.
However, a BJP leader from Majha Dr Avtar Singh said, "I don’t think that Mann’s victory is any indication of inclination of Punjabi’s towards radicalization but in my view, it is more of frustration and dismay from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government's performance, after all the people of Punjab gave a landslide victory to AAP just a few months ago."
At the same time, he said people of Sangrur Lok Sabha constituency had also rejected Congress and SAD (B).
BJP has gained in Malwa region while there is a complete rout of SAD (B), Avtar opined.
A former civil servant Mann has been vocal about a separate Sikh state and had been taking extreme stands in support of his ideology.
Reacting to Mann’s victory SAD(A) office secretary Harbir Singh Sandhu said, "The electoral battle was not between the political parties but between SAD(A) vs Punjab government, Center government, BJP and Congress” adding that Mann had always stood by an independent Sikh state and people of Punjab had given their mandate in favour of his ideology.
