Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Renowned historian, author and archaeologist Ramchandra Morwanchikar died due to old age in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar on Saturday night. He was 88.
Morwanchikar was undergoing treatment at a private hospital here for the past few days, and he passed away around 11pm on Saturday. He is survived by two sons, a daughter, daughters-in-law, a son-in-law, and grandchildren, among other family members. The last rites were performed at the Pratap Nagar crematorium on Sunday morning.
Morwanchikar served as the head of the History Department and the director of the Tourism Administration Department at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University (Bamu). He was in the teaching profession for around four decades.
He penned 16 books and published over 200 research papers on different reputed platforms, besides guiding nearly 150 students in their research work. He made significant contributions to archaeological excavations at Paithan and also authored an important book titled ‘Pratishthan to Paithan' that throws light on various kingdoms in Paithan.
Morwanchikar did extensive research in the field of history and culture, particularly on the historic city of Paithan and other heritage sites in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
Searching for evidence from prehistoric times, Morwanchikar was of the view that water is the tool for writing history and presented the concept of water culture. He also started the Indian Water Culture Society to raise awareness about water management.
