BANGALORE: Have they resigned? Have they not? Four BJP corporators from Yelahanka constituency kept everyone guessing on Tuesday. At the end of the day, it turned out that they had not resigned.
The four, however, did mull quitting the council apparently unhappy over the standing committees allotted to them.
Confusion was rife as seen from their statements.
Y N Ashwath, corporator of Kempegowda ward, said: "Yes, all four of us resigned from the standing committees two days after being elected.'' But the other three , K V Yashoda, Geetha Shashikumar and M Muniraju , said they hadn't quit.
Said Yashoda: "I am yet to decide on my resignation. I am new to BBMP council and need sometime to stabilize. I have spoken about this to my MLA S R Vishwanath.''
Muniraju, corporator of Yelahanka Satellite town who initially admitted to having resigned, when contacted on Tuesday morning, denied it. "Who said so? I have not resigned. Initially I had planned to resign but will stay back if my MLA says so.''
Though they planned to quit ostensibly to help or participate in the upcoming gram panchayat elections in surrounding villages, a deeper probe revealed that they were unhappy about the committees allotted to them.
Ashwath was the only corporator who elaborated on the real reasons for his `resignation'. "Even though I am an elected representative for the fifth time now, I am still made only a member in the standing committee. Many newcomers have already risen to becoming chairmen of the committees. This is unfair. But I value the party and instead offered to resign from my membership,'' he explained.
MAYOR UNAWARE
Mayor S K Nataraj said he was unaware of the developments. "I have not received their resignations so far. In case they resign, we shall have to invite nominations again and elect new members at the earliest,'' he said.
Even party leader Katte Satyanarayana was surprised. "None has come to me with their resignations. We have also checked with their committee chairmen.''
Going by palike practice, the members submit their resignation to either the mayor, their party leader, committee chairman or all. But in this case, all four members chose to approach their MLA.
