Vijayananda Hegde had introduced himself as Swami Samastananda Saraswati to the trustees of Nimishamba temple.
BANGALORE: Until he proclaimed himself to be a swamiji, changing professions was his hobby. Driven by the desire to earn money, Vijayananda Hegde, a native of Sirsi in Uttara Kannada, duped a temple trust in Rajarajeswari Nagar. He has been arrested now and the police have recovered the money - Rs 85,000 - he stole from the temple. Vijayananda Hegde had introduced himself as Swami Samastananda Saraswati to the trustees of Nimishamba temple.
He also managed to impress the devotees with his speeches and discourses. Cashing in on their trust, Hegde then set about executing his plan. He told them he owned a piece of land in Pune and wanted to sell it to the trust. The trustees deposited Rs 85,000 into a joint account shared by Hegde and his wife Triveni, a fine arts lecturer in Davangere.
Hegde proposed to show the land if two men accompanied him to Pune. However, Hegde managed ran away on the way to Pune. The trustees immediately lodged a complaint with the police. The police then tracked him through his bank account address and arrested him. “Hegde was a photographer in Madiwala. He frequently changed his professions. After marriage, he was not to be seen for some time. Finally, he appeared in a saint's attire and said he had taken ‘sanyasa deeksha' in the Himalayas. The trust members had also offered him 1 kg of silver,'' a senior police officer said.
