BANGALORE: A police constable has been arrested for receiving stolen property from chain-snatchers and siphoning them off without informing his superiors.
Constable Siddaiah attached to the Kumaraswamy Layout police station had received gold ornaments from his friend Mahesh, 30, and his associate.
Mahesh (aged around 30 years) had been arrested a few days ago for chain-snatching and during interrogation he spilled the beans on his ties with Siddaiah.
He claimed to have given Siddaiah several gold chains.
Police investigated the mobile phone records of Mahesh and Siddaiah, and found that the duo interacted frequently and shared the booty looted by the chain-snatcher.
Siddaiah, who was formerly working in J P Nagar police station, regularly received gold chains that Mahesh had snatched in various parts of the city.
Booked by J P Nagar police under section 411 of the IPC for receiving stolen property, the constable was arrested. A magisterial court has remanded Siddaiah to judicial custody.
Investigating officers said they are trying to find out if Siddaiah was in anyway assisting Mahesh in his chain-snatching efforts.
