HYDERABAD: It'll be stuffy for the otherwise high-flying Gali Janardhan Reddy at the 1876-constructed Central Prison, Chanchalguda, in Hyderabad.
The old construction doesn't measure up to the palatial house the mining baron is accustomed to. And it's crammed. As against the authorised capacity for 650, there are over 700 inmates in the jail, which houses only undertrials.
1x1 polls
This means Reddy might find it difficult to stretch himself comfortably when he sleeps in the barracks where the lights remain on during the night as a rule.
Prisoners are allowed to move out of the barracks during the day, but that may pose problems for a high-profile prisoner like Reddy and his brother-in-law Srinivasa Reddy.
Prisons officials say people who come from a better economic background tend to withdraw completely and retreat into a cocoon when faced with unsavoury behaviour while mingling with other inmates.
The former Karnataka minister will have to wait in a queue for his plate of food. Also, he'd have to wash his plate and clothes, and do a bit of sweeping. Reddy will have to sleep on a hard floor with Shabad stones in the barracks. Undertrials, which Reddy is, can get their own bedsheet and packaged food.
If Reddy gets a special-class prisoner status from the court, he will, then, be entitled to some privileges such as better food and accommodation in a different enclosure like former Satyam chief Ramalinga Raju.

Inmates have access to newspapers and TV. They also get to play caroms, chess and badminton. The reception will be cold for any new inmate. Even if Reddy gets to wear his own clothes, the strip search on entry is mandatory.
