Karnataka family suicide pact in Biharfollowed boy’s murder over gaming

Bengaluru: A 50-year-old Bengaluru man facing charges of murdering his teenage nephew allegedly entered into a suicide pact with his mother and two sisters. The four were found dead inside a Jain dharmashala in Rajgir, Nalanda district, Bihar, police said.The deceased have been identified as GR Naga Prasad, his mother GR Sumangala (78), and his sisters Shilpa GR (48) and Shruta GR (43). Shilpa was the mother of the victim —Amogh Kirti (14), whose murder Prasad had confessed to last year in Bengaluru.
In Aug 2025, Prasad surrendered before Soladevanahalli police in northwest Bengaluru, admitting to killing Amogh following repeated arguments over the boy's alleged addiction to online games. Police said Amogh, who had dropped out midway through class 9, was under Prasad's care after Shilpa expressed concern about her son's behaviour and requested her brother to counsel him.A bachelor, Prasad reportedly tried to persuade the boy to resume his studies, but frequent quarrels erupted over demands for money to play online games. During one such heated argument, Prasad allegedly murdered Amogh. After the incident, Prasad attempted to kill himself by jumping into a lake near his house, but survived due to low water levels in it. He then spent nearly three days at the KSRTC bus terminal in Majestic, Bengaluru, before surrendering to police.Police initially faced difficulty registering the case as Shilpa refused to lodge a complaint against her brother. Soladevanahalli police later registered the case suo motu. Prasad was remanded in judicial custody at Bengaluru Central Prison.Subsequently, Shilpa approached the court seeking bail for her brother, which was granted last month. Police sources said the four family members left on a pilgrimage in mid-Jan. Their deaths in Bihar are being investigated, with preliminary indications pointing to suicide by overdose of sleeping pills.
