Massive tree, collapsed wall crush bus shelter in Bengaluru
Bengaluru: A massive tree toppled near Ramakrishna Mutt in Chamarajpet Sunday evening, bringing down an adjacent compound wall and crushing a bus shelter.
The incident occurred around 5pm within Bengaluru Central City Corporation limits. According to fire and emergency services personnel, the huge tree fell first, causing a nearly 20-metre-long wall belonging to the State Bank of India premises to collapse. The tree and wall fell onto the nearby bus shelter, triggering panic among commuters.
While four two-wheelers were damaged, police sources confirmed that there were no human casualties. According to locals, two persons sustained minor injuries. Fire brigade officials said the gradual fall of the tree allowed people sheltering at the bus stop to move away in time, preventing a major tragedy.
The incident has again raised concerns over the safety of ageing compound walls in the city. This is the third such wall collapse reported in Bengaluru in the past three months. Earlier incidents at Bowring Hospital and Vijayanagar Club had together claimed eight lives.
Rain likely over next 3 days
Meanwhile, India Meteorological Department has forecast light to moderate rain and thundershowers across Bengaluru until Wednesday, with wind speeds of 30-50kmph. On Sunday, parts of the city, including JP Nagar and Banashankari, received light showers. Traffic police have advised motorists to exercise caution on waterlogged roads and follow official advisories for real-time traffic updates.
