Fire Safety Week Ends, But Gaps in Preparedness Still Smolder in Bhopal
Bhopal As the spotlight of Fire Safety Week dims, serious gaps in the state capital’s fire preparedness remain unresolved, raising concerns.
The 2026–27 campaign, themed “Safe School, Safe Hospital and Safety Aware Society – Together for Fire Prevention,” concluded on May 10. Yet coordination failures, outdated data, and regulatory loopholes continue to undermine safety efforts.
The most pressing issue is coordination between the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) office. BMC still lacks a complete list of hospitals with more than 50 beds because the CMHO has not shared the required information. Officials from both sides remain locked in a waiting game, each expecting the other to act first. BMC provides NoC for hospitals which are 50-bed or over.
Compounding the problem, the Urban Administration Department’s portal for data-sharing has not been fully utilised. Meanwhile, the state’s Fire NOC dashboard under the Online Single Window System — designed to provide real-time updates since April 2020 — has shown no fresh public entries. The absence of updates has fueled questions about transparency and follow-up after the awareness drive.
Another gap lies in regulation of coaching institutes. Current norms exempt centers under 500 square metres and below 15 metres in height from mandatory fire NOCs, leaving overcrowded classrooms vulnerable, BMC official explained.
Road diversions and repair works add to the risks. Officials note that such disruptions are often not flagged to the BMC, potentially delaying fire tenders during emergencies.
Experts warn that awareness campaigns alone cannot substitute for systemic reforms. Without updated hospital data, stronger monitoring of online portals, clearer rules for coaching centres, and better communication on road works, fire-prevention efforts in Bhopal may remain incomplete long after Fire Safety Week.
