Gas victims cry negligence at Kamla Nehru dialysis unit
Bhopal: The condition of gas victim patients hastily "discharged" from the Bhopal Memorial Hospital & Research Centre (BMHRC) after the hospital was declared an isolation centre for COVID-19 patients on March 24 is not known, but kidney patients among survivors of Bhopal gas tragedy, who have now been asked to get dialysis done at Kamla Nehru Hospital, are sharing videos and audios to show how "shabbily" they were treated during dialysis at Kamla Nehru Hospital on Saturday.
One such patient Aqueel Ahmed, who has to undergo dialysis three times a week, said "There was just one technician to look after 11 of us who were put on dialysis in the first session Dialysis is a delicate process and requires attention till the patient is on the dialysis machine. How do you expect one technician to take care of 11 patients at one time particularly when nursing staff and ward boys in attendance were inexperienced and knew little about dialysis."
He apprehends that unlike BMHRC , which remains clean and hygienic, Kamla Nehru Hospital is "dirty" and “people like us, who have low immunity, may contract an infection anytime.”
Urvashi Pathak, who accompanies her mother Vidya Pathak for dialysis for the past 12 years, said, "There used to be two to three technicians at the time of dialysis of patients at BMHRC and even ward boys were highly trained but here if the machine started to beep in warning, the nursing staff and ward boys had no clue as to how to put it on mute. She also complained of unhygienic conditions in the ward, where dialysis was carried out.
When contacted for comments, director of Kamla Nehru Hospital, Dr M A Khurram said, “After 31 patients registered for dialysis at BMHRC were transferred to Kamla Nehru Hospital, the number. of patients for dialysis have doubled at our hospital. It will have its impact. They have sent us two dialysis machines, but when we asked for technicians they refused on the pretext that they may need them for COVID-19 patients."
