Kajri Jhoola mahotsav to revive dying traditions
Bhopal: Monsoon season has always been associated with several beautiful festivals like Teej for which daughters come to their parents’ homes, deck up in festive finery and get pampered by their grandparents, parents, uncles, aunts and cousins. After that begins a potpouri of folk songs, jhoola, traditional sweets and savouries that enhance the flavour of rainy season. But in the current scenario, with most of the people staying in flats as nuclear families, these magnificent traditions are dying a slow and painful death. “To revive these dying traditions, we are organise Kajri-Jhoola Mahotsav at Bharat Bhawan. This three-day music festival is dedicated to folk gayiki traditions of Kajri and Jhoola, which are associated with the months of Sawan, The sad part is that most the people have forgotten these intrinsic aspects; this event is basicaly an endeavour to revive and conserve these ancient traditions, which are invaluable,” said the chief administrative officer of Bharat Bhawan, Prem Shankar Shukla. In its fifth edition, this annual event will be organised at Antarang Hall of Bharat Bhawan; every day music lovers of Bhopal will be enthralled by three different groups of folk singers, said Shukla. There are many music lovers in the city, who are also looking forward to attend this lyrical soiree. Homemaker Chandrika Goel, who is a regular at Bharat Bhawan events, said, “I was born and brought up in Banaras and grew up listening to Jhoola, Kajri, Banna, Banni. Every year, we had a large get-together at home, wherein my mother would serve ghewar, sattoo ke laddoo and moong dal pakode with mint chutney at Teej. After her demise, a decade ago, I lost touch with all these things, but now I get to revisit my childhood memories at this annual kajri jhoola mahotsav.”
