Koraput: A 56-year-old woman and her 30-year-old daughter died, while three others sustained injuries, after the car they were travelling in collided with a trailer truck on NH-26 near Jhitikiguda in Nabarangpur district, early on Sunday.
The deceased were identified as Usha Rani and her daughter, Soumya. Soumya’s husband, their six-year-old daughter and the car’s driver were rushed to the district headquarters hospital, police said. Sources said the family was returning to Nabarangpur from Puri, while the trailer truck was travelling from Nabarangpur towards Kalahandi when the accident happened.
“The impact of the crash turned the car into a mangled heap, trapping all the occupants inside. On receiving information, police and fire services personnel reached the spot and rescued the victims from the wreckage,” said a local. The truck driver is currently absconding and efforts are on to nab him. Police said a case was registered and investigation has been launched.
