BHUBANESWAR: Chief minister
Naveen Patnaik’s recent announcement to sponsor Indian hockey for 10 more years has been welcomed not only by the players, but the hockey fraternity in the state as well.
As the state government felicitated the hockey stars for their spectacular performance at the Tokyo Olympics on Tuesday, Naveen announced the decision to sponsor both men’s and women’s teams for another 10 years, extending the partnership beyond 2023.
Hockey legend Dilip Tirkey said the announcement is a right step to bring back hockey glory. “It’s a historic decision by our chief minister. Odisha government has extended enormous support to the men’s and women’s hockey teams in the last few years. It’s not just about sponsorships, the players were provided with the best infrastructure, best coaching and exposure. The recent announcement will motivate and encourage our players to bring more glory to the country,” said Tirkey.
Appreciating the decision, hockey Olympian Lazarus Barla said it will take hockey to new heights. “The Odisha government extended support to Hockey India when it needed the most. All facilities were provided to the players and the results of both the men’s and women’s teams are before us. Extending further support is a big step and an example for other states to emulate the same in other sports,” said Barla. Those involved in the grass-roots also hailed the chief minister’s decision.
Milton Bilung, Sundargarh district sports officer and senior hockey coach said, “Young players will get motivated because of the decision of the state government and aspire to play for the country.”
