PURI: Tourists can soon go on a drive down the sprawling Puri beach and let their hair down. As of now, the only bit of entertainment that the beach offers are shopping for souvenirs, camel and horse rides. The four-wheel all-terrain vehicles imported from Japan and Taiwan would promise tourists a fun ride that they would relish.
All-terrain vehicles have already been launched on the beach for bay watchers for rescue and search operations.
Ranger Adventure Foundation, a city-based outfit working in the field of alternative tourism design and development, introduced the novel service on the beach to help police carry out search and rescue operations in those parts of the beach which are inaccessible on a regular police van.
"Our aim is to help the police reach out to inaccessible surfaces of the beach with the help of these vehicles," said Sanjay Samantaray, founder of the outfit. "Our main area of operation would be the Puri-Konark Marine Drive which is lonely and difficult to access with regular vehicles," Samantaray added. "We are now planning to introduce these vehicles for fun rides soon," he maintained.
"The vehicles are available in different models. The one being used currently is 5.5 feet long and 3 feet wide. With an engine capacity of 250cc, it can speed up to 80 km. It is a two-seater vehicle," he said.
Puri S P, Soumendra Priyadarshi, said the vehicles would add teeth to police patrolling.
