The police have arrested two persons for extorting money from two students, including a Punjab Police inspector's son studying in Class IX, in exchange of providing them protection even as their third accomplice was absconding.

CHANDIGARH: The police have arrested two persons for extorting money from two students, including a Punjab Police inspector's son studying in Class IX, in exchange of providing them protection even as their third accomplice was absconding.
DSP (crime) Jagbir Singh said Sector 24 residents Sumit Kalyan and Loven Sabharwal were arrested while their friend Sam of Sector 45 was on the run. The complainant, inspector Bhupinder Singh, reported Rs 5,000 went missing from his cupboard a few days ago while cash and jewellery had disappeared from the house in Sector 23 during the last 18 months too. Bhupinder noticed that his son was not focusing on his studies and had become an introvert. When he enquired, one of his son's friends told him that the three accused were extorting money by bullying and instilling a fear of other kids in him.
A sum of Rs 4,500 and a gold ring were found from Kalyan, an unemployed youth, and Sabharwal, an even management professional. Both were arrested on Tuesday. Police said the two told them they used to visit a private school to collect "protection money". Police claimed the two confessed they had extorted two gold bangles, three gold rings, one gold pendant, one pair of ear-rings and lakhs of rupees. A vehicle, Tata Indigo, was also recovered from them. On Wednesday, both the accused were sent in police remand till April 13.
A case under sections 392 (robbery) and 34 (act done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the IPC was registered against the accused at Sector 17 police station.
OLD CASE
Recently, a team of the operation cell had arrested three youths for allegedly extorting money from school students after befriending them. Those who refused to give money were threatened by the accused. The three accused were identified as Rattan Lubana, a resident of Kishangarh, Amitoz Singh, a resident of Sector 20, and Rajveer Singh, a resident of Janetpur village in Dera Bassi.
