Burglars take away ₹30-35L cash, iPhones from Sector 7 showroom
Chandigarh: Three burglars broke into a sports showroom in Sector 7 and decamped with cash estimated between ₹30 lakh and ₹35 lakh, along with two iPhones, on the intervening night of May 13/14.
On the complaint of the showroom owner, Sector 26 police registered a case against unidentified persons and have begun scanning CCTV footage from the area. No arrests have been made so far.
Rajesh Bajaj, the complainant, said he and his brother run two sports showrooms — Prime Sports and Metro Sports — in the sector. The theft came to light when he and his employees reached the premises around 10am Thursday and found the locks of Metro Sports broken.
Bajaj told police that cash collected over the past week had been kept in two drawers and was stolen along with two iPhones. Other sports goods in the showroom were left untouched.
Police were informed via the 112 helpline, following which a team from Sector 26 police station reached the spot.
CCTV footage showed three men entering the showroom around 2am using a metal cutter and leaving about 20 minutes later with a bag containing cash.
The complainant said the cash had not been deposited in the bank due to ongoing preparations for his son’s wedding.
Police said the accused could not be clearly identified from the footage, as one of them was wearing a helmet and the others’ faces were not captured.
Teams from the crime branch, operation cell and district crime cell also inspected the spot. Police have questioned six employees and are probing the possibility of insider involvement, suspecting that only someone aware of the cash kept inside could have targeted the showroom.
