Couple killed for same-gotra marriage
KARNAL: Honour killing reared its medieval head once again in the caste-conscious and time-warped hinterland of Haryana with the community-sanctioned murder of a young couple who had dared to bend the rules of gotra and marry. Three relatives of the couple, arrested after the bodies were recovered, told police over the weekend that murder was the fitting end for the love-driven couple.
And in the village, where a caste panchayat had allegedly ordered their death, most villagers agreed, some even suggesting that the culprits be feted and honoured.

The murders itself happened on June 15 when Babli and Manoj, who eloped and married in court after their families protested their union because they belonged to the same gotra, were forced to drink pesticide and thrown into the Hansi Butana canal. They were alive as they plunged into the river with their hands and legs bound. But it was only after their bodies surfaced on June 23 that the sordid tale of barbarism was revealed.
A quick investigation by the Karnal police soon led to the arrest of Suresh, an elder brother of Babli, and two other relatives — uncle Rajinder and cousin Gurdev.
