bathinda: after the arrest of four persons for their alleged involvement in corporate espionage in the second week of january, the bathinda police was over enthusiastic in claiming the busting of a high-profile case. but one and half month after the arrest of four employees of furgo geonics private limited, mumbai, the police failed to produce any further substantial evidence to prove its case in court and the accused were granted bail.
leave lodging an fir against the accused narpat singh, santosh parkar, jv bobby of mumbai and dasrath singh of jaswantgarh (rajasthan) on january 10 under section 3 and 15 of the indian official secret act, the police reportedly failed to make a headway in the case. though the police case alleged that the accused had taken photographs of vital installations including army and air force installation, railway stations, vital bridges, rail tracks and many other important government buildings in punjab, haryana, madhya pradesh and rajasthan using global positioning system and digital global positioning system on the basis of longitude and latitude, but the court granted the bail to the accused on monday for the police evidence failed to show in the court that the accused had taken photographs of any army or air force installation. at a time when tension between india and pakistan was escalating after terrorists attack on parliament, the bathinda police seemed to be in a haste to draw a conclusion that the accused were taking photographs of vital installations on the basis of their longitude and latitude for the belligerent neighbour so that missiles could be targeted at specific points. the accused alleged that the police arrested them on the suspicion of espionage when they were pinpointing specific points for laying optical fibre cable. as the accused could not produce documents showing that they were engaged by fugro geonics company at the time of the arrest, the chief judicial magistrate declined bail. after decline of bail by the cjm, a company representative made an appeal in the court of district and sessions judge here against the cjm''s order placing necessary documents. the judge granted bail to the accused on payment of rs 5,000 with one surety of like amount. however, the police have been able to lay their hands on any incriminating document.
