LUDHIANA: Two days after Ludhiana (rural) police arrested four miscreants for kidnapping and murder of a city based jeweler it has come to light that a worker at a jewelry shop in Barnala had played a key role by giving them tip off about the victim.
Rajinder Verma, a jeweler of Haibowal area who was also Vice President Congress for Ludhiana (Urban), was kidnapped on Monday from Saraba road near Sudhar by the four accused Gurmeet Singh alias Meeti of Naiwal village in Barnala, Darshan Singh alias Darshi of Chauhanke village in Barnala and Avtar Singh alias Bhola of Thikriwal and later his dead body was found from Dadahur village on Tuesday.
During the probe it came out that Sarabjeet Singh of Radhe Krishna Jewellers in Barnala had informed the accused that Verma would be coming to Barnala to sell of the gold ornaments. Police suspect that Singh who worked at a monthly salary of Rs.13000 at the jeweler's shop used to dole out information about the potential targets to the accused. Investigating officials mentioned that the accused had carried out many incidents of loot in Sangrur and Barnala district on the basis of information from Sarabjeet, many of which were not even reported.
Ludhiana (Rural) police has already arrested all the four accused on Tuesday and registered a case of kidnapping and murder on the basis of statement of the driver of the deceased Monu alias Roshan Lal who was accompanying him before being thrown out of the vehicle by the accused.
An investigating official said that the four accused were after the deceased for last over three years and had targeted him once before as well.
"The accused lived in acute penury. They did not even have the money to get petrol for the car which was used for the crime and had borrowed Rs.15, 00 from an acquaintance. They even tried to avoid paying at the toll plaza by taking a different route through village while following the jeweler.
Police said the accused was now being questioned to find out about other crimes which the accused had committed after getting a tip off from Sarabjeet Singh. It was yet to be ascertained how much share he would get from each successful loot.
In the meanwhile, sources said that the deceased had fought hard to escape from the clutches of the miscreants and had even managed to open the door of his car to run away but it was only after they stabbed him on calf area that he started bleeding profusely and gave up before succumbing to his injuries.

The wind blew it off
The accused while following the jeweler in their Hyundai Verna car from Barnala crossed Mehal Kalan toll plaza at 4.09 pm on Monday barely two minutes before the jeweller's Toyota Innova crossed the toll plaza. Their vehicle had a sweater on the bonnet covering the front number plate but due to wind it was displaced and the registration number of car was recorded by the cameras at plaza. Also the driver of the deceased had seen the initial number of the vehicle PB11 and sweater and informed the police about it. While seeing the footage at Toll Plaza the driver identified the vehicle which helped the police crack the case.
