Panjab varsity granted ‘Category 1’ status by UGC

Chandigarh: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has graded Panjab University as a ‘Category-l’ university.
The move stems from the UGC mandate to determine, promote and maintain the standards of higher education in the country.
In order to grant autonomy to the better-performing institutions, the commission had notified UGC (Categorisation of Universities (Only) for grant of Graded Autonomy) Regulations, 2018, on February 12, 2018.
Under these regulations, the proposal received from Panjab University was examined, processed and considered by the commission in its 579th meeting held on April 16 this year.
The commission then decided to grade Panjab University, Chandigarh, as a ‘Category-l’ university as per the above regulations. The university will now be eligible for all the benefits as stipulated under Clause 4, such as dimensions of autonomy for category-l universities, of these regulations.
However, the university will inform the commission about the benefits being implemented and its changed status, as applicable, by regulation 6 of the UGC Regulations, 2018.
This status entitles PU to start a new course/programme/department/centre as well as open constituent units/off-campus centres within its geographical jurisdiction, without the approval of the UGC. PU can now also open research parks, incubation centres, and university society linkage centres, either on its own or in partnership with private partners, without the approval of the commission. It can also offer courses in the open and distance learning modes, without approval of the UGC.
VC Renu Vig has complimented the faculty, students and staff on this achievement. Prof Y P Verma, registrar, also thanked the VC for her leadership, which he said ensured marked improvement in all aspects of teaching-learning processes and rankings.
