Under debt, farmer dies by suicide

Bathinda: A 36-year-old farmer died by suicide after alleged consuming a poisonous substance at his home in Diwana village, Barnala district, on Wednesday. Farmer organisation BKU (Ekta Ugrahan) said Harwinder Singh was suffering from depression due to mounting debt owing to inadequate agriculture and livestock earnings and expenses for his ailing wife. Chamkaur Singh, the Barnala president of the farmer organisation, demanded that the state govt waive off Harwinder's debt and provide compensation to his family.
