With 3rd rank in AIIMS test, Panchkula girl tops Tricity

CHANDIGARH: Panchkula girl Mehak Arora bagged the third rank and topped the Tricity in the AIIMS MBBS 2018 entrance exam, the results of which were declared on Monday.
Three students from the Tricity were in the top 10 list and four in the top 15. Mohali’s Manraj Singh Sra got AIR (all-India rank) 4, Eishvauk Aggarwal, Tricity medical topper of CBSE, AIR 10 and Sagar Mishra AIR 15.

Another girl Parul Berry got AIR 30. She was the third Tricity topper in NEET. Another student Vaibhav Garg got AIR 93 in AIIMS, while his NEET rank was AIR 69. A total of six students made it to top 100 from the Tricity this year.

Mehak also topped in Haryana. She had come first in the Tricity in NEET and second in Haryana, with an AIR 31.
Mehak said she was expecting a good score but this certainly came as a surprise to her. She had been aiming for AIIMS even though she had topped NEET.
For Mehak, her father’s untimely death owing to alleged medical negligence spurred her to pursue medical stream. “I was in Class VII, when I lost my father. My mother tells me he just had a toothache. The doctor gave him some injection and he died. So, I want to become a doctor and save lives,” the resident of Panchkula’s Sector 11 told TOI.

According to Mehak, one should have fun along with studies. She used to study for six to seven hours. Mehak’s mother Renu is a chartered accountant. She had scored 92.6% in her Class XII exams. A Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana and National Talent Search Examination (NTSE) scholar, Mehak was also selected for the second stage of both Biology and Chemistry Olympiads. She was amongst the top 1% students in Physics Olympiad.Toppers enjoyed studies, gave up social media
Mehak had scored 95.4% in her Class X board exams. She was a student of Sri Guru Gobind Singh School, Sector 35, Chandigarh.
Manraj had got AIR 159 in NEET. A student of SD Senior Secondary School, Sector 24, he said he was sure of qualifying the exam but AIR 4 “feels great”. Coming for a family of doctors, he is now aiming for AIIMs, Delhi. His parents are his inspiration. In Class XII, he scored 93.6% marks. He shared that he used to study for 8 to 10 hours. In his free time, he likes to read novels. Sharing his success mantra, he said, “Regularity and practising past year papers was helpful in scoring well.”
Eishvauk Aggarwal said, “AIIMS has been my aim but AIR 10 is a cherry on the cake. I still cannot believe it.” She said she balanced her studies and all other activities which helped her score well. She deactivated her social media accounts, but kept watching videos on YouTube for relaxing herself.
She said one should not expect too much from themselves.
Sagar Mishra, 17, a student of DC Montessori School, Manimajra, had secured the fourth position in the Tricity in NEET, with an AIR 49 in NEET. Now in AIIMS, he secured AIR 15 and is third in the Tricity. Sagar even cracked JEE advance recently, but his main aim was AIIMS. He is also a KVPY and NTSE Scholar who cleared the stage I of Biology Olympiad. Sagar, who aims to become a neurosurgeon, said he was inspired by his grandfather who died of Parkinson’s disease, to choose medial stream.
Parul Berry, who got AIR 30 in AIIMS, was the third Tricity topper in NEET with AIR 47. Both her father and mother are doctors. Her father is a paediatrician, while her mother is a gynaecologist. “Enjoy studies. Take it as a burden and you will never reach your goal,” she said.
Sixth in the row was Vaibhav Garg, with AIR 93. Vaibhav wants to be the first in the family to become a doctor. His father is an engineer and his mother a school teacher. According to him, repetition and regular revision is the key to success.
